Crazy! 07/06/2011

The past few months have been nuts.  I'm usually full into knitting frenzy for fall by this time of year, but I'm woefully behind and just starting to get back into the swing of things.

I've been needing to do some self nurturing, so I spent some time last week making myself a new pair of socks.  This week, I'm going to take stock, make sure everything I have completed is listed in my etsy shop, and make an up-to-date list of what colors and fibers I've got available.

I've had some time over the past couple of months to work on some ideas, so I'm glad of that.  I finished a pattern for footies last week and have my first pair completed, and I hope to be adding more of those to my shop.  With how popular ballet flats are, I hope these appeal to someone!

Prototypin' 04/02/2011

I spend a lot of time coming up with new ideas...most of which never get done!  About a week ago, I decided to make more of a dedicated effort to get knitting new things.  Rather than tediously planning out my next moves and doing intricate sketches, I'm trying out the wing-it technique.

As a result, I've come up with the world's ugliest sock, and this:
I'm pretty pleased with the result, and think I've perfected the pattern.  I knit this fish net tabi in a 98% organic cotton, 2% elastic yarn.  It works up fantastically for tight knitting like the sole and toes, but it gets pretty saggy through the mesh upper and leg after a few stretches.  Once I find a more suitable yarn, I'll get these puppies in my shop!

Every time I think I've caught up, I get distracted by something else! There's been a lot going on in the twiddletoes world, and that's both a good thing and a bad thing.

The spring weather has been the biggest wrench in the works, recently. Reading outside while the dog suns herself is just too tempting most days, and my production has slowed. I have recently brought some life back into my stash, so I'm hoping I get some yarnspiration soon. I have tons of ideas but am just soo lazy on the implementation. :)

I think I've finally caught up on all of the custom orders that came in at the beginning of January.  I love the frantic rush, mostly because it puts me into knitting overdrive and allows me to finish a sweater in a week!

Yep, finished in a week.  Now that things have slowed down, the knitting factory desires have slowed down, too.  After I get a few more new listings of my regular ol' tabi in my shop, I'm going to continue to work on my experiments.

dahlish! 12/16/2010

dahlish is a newer member of the HAF family, and it's so nice to have another knitter/fiber person on board. She's an excellent knitter and loves to create items to share with others. You might be able to tell from her shop, but she's also a mom and has a focus on adorable items for kids.

Check out these charming dollies from her shop:

Many knitters spend a lot of time knitting for their families, friends, and customers, so I'm always interested to see what people create for themselves. I found these socks on her blog that are totally droolworthy and totally hers! Go dahlish.

Since I mentioned the hat I made for the man-beast, I figured I'd post a picture of it:
I'm far from any hat genius, so this is the Marram Hat from Eskimimi Knits.  I went with one color, this soft, lovely, extrafine merino that he picked out.  I love the spirals around.  It's way too warm for him to wear it, yet, but it's funny to watch him picking it up and putting it on. :)

As soon as September hit, sales and orders started coming in.  It's been a fun two weeks, and even more fun is the cooler weather outside.

Of course, it's still getting into the 90s during the day, but it's such a relief to go outside in the evenings when it drops into the 60-70s.  I'm overcome with the desire to knit stockings, socks for myself, and sweaters.  Project ADD has consumed me and I have half a dozen things on the needles.

Yay for fall!

I guess I've been psyching myself out for the holiday season, because the past few weeks have all been about making changes and progress towards being the best I can for the holidays.

Some of that includes:

  • Planning a general reshoot.  I noticed a bunch of my former 'okay' pictures really need to be redone.
  • Making an effort to finish socks, rather than just putting them in my final touches basket.
  • Adding pictures of my packaging to listings with an empty photo slot.
  • Cutting out a bunch of paper for sock sleeves.
  • Making repeats of current listings, so I can relist immediately or fulfill custom orders.
  • Trying to knock out some of my personal projects before the end of the month.
  • Planning my purchases for the holidays, so that I'm not in a rush on the gift giving front when orders pick up.
I also think I've settled on a supply order, so I plan on making that in the next few days.  Yarny goodness is so inspiring and motivating!

As I mentioned in my last post, I've been making an effort to turn over my stash, and trying use up more yarn than I usually do before making another purchase. I've gotten to the point, now, where I'm down to a few colors of my stock tabi yarn, and I'm trying to decide how to proceed.

I've been trying to fill my shop for the holiday season, but it's tough to feel motivated to do that when things are soooo sloooow during the anti-knit season. I've been sticking with it, making breaks for my own projects and experiments, trying not to burn out, and have made pretty good progress. I'd hoped to have more listings, but I still did better than I expected.

It's now to the point where I should start ordering more yarn, but I'm a bit stuck on colors, even after looking at color and fashion predictions for the fall. I know I need some more traditionally feminine colors (purples, pinks), and came to realize that I need more greens (which I'm totally not feeling), earthy tones, blues, and yellows.

I just need to shake up the whole set, and that's tough for me. I've spent the past few weeks poking at the Pantone Fall Color Report, and it really gave me a place to jump off, and I encourage anyone currently struggling with color to check it out. What colors are looking for this winter and fall?

Note to self... 07/16/2010

Don't do a thorough arm workout on days you're working with very tiny needles!  It's good for preventing repetitive stress injuries and awesome for toned arms, but it's wicked difficult to knit with shaky hands.

Good thing the socks are for me! :)
